Price of Software
Wink: Don't squat with your spurs on.
I ordered Window Vista today because a computer I recently bought included that as an incentive back in December. Of course the customer has to pay for shipping. For the life of me I can't figure how it would cost thirty cdn. to ship a DVD anywhere. But anyway I decided that was as cheap as it would get as far as obtaining Vista is concerned.
When I look at the prices being charged, both locally and on the internet for the various editions of the operating system, it is easy to understand why pirate copies exist. And if you look at the office suite that goes with it, you are talking a considerable chunk of change for an individual to pay.
On top of all that is the various testing outfits that check these things out to the limit and report more negative aspects of the new systems than there are positives. Plus if you have not just purchased a new computer, you are likely going to be hit with various hardware upgrades such as ram, video cards or more.
There are alternatives such as using Linux, or getting a Mac, and going for Open Office as a replacement. But those don't do everything the systems we are used to do.
Reading the above mentioned test reports is very confusing, with about a 50-50 split that it is just eye candy and nothing new really exists, to it is better, for security, for just the nice things it includes and does in a more modern way. I am glad I can get it for the cost of 'shipping' as they call it. But it is easy to understand why I get so many emails with all those free offers, and why some choose to take them up on it.
