Name Already In Use

This is rant day, and one thing that gets to me lately is when you fill out a form with the typical name-email-who are you type of form, it tells you the name you selected is already in use, or not available.

In a sense I suppose in some cases the name has to be unique to be able to tell you apart from the others. For example  if my name is Waterpuss, they should be able to tell the difference between Waterpuss@anywhere.com and Waterpuss@anyhoo.com, but apparently not. (By the way those addresses aren't real, only this program thinks they are.) But what happens when you type your name in the magic box? "The name you selected is not available." Perhaps you would like to try Waterpus1, Waterpus42, WoWaterpus76 or some other combination you won't remember.

I even have this happen after selecting some names that I am pretty sure no one else would be using. Especially since the name is registered to me.

* As an addition to this one while I am ranting, how about those little confirmation boxes where you have to type in the combination of letters and numbers to prove that you are a real person and not a spam machine? I can understand that.

But I can't understand why they have to be 'swirly' distorted so you can't even read them. If you can't read them how are you supposed to type them in?

* Which leads to another one. If you select a name that is not available, or you fail to type in the confirmation gibberish correctly, most of the forms blank out and you have to do the whole process again.

Oh me head!
