Wide Screen Small Screen
Read an interesting piece the other day about monitors. Why are we so 'wowed' by wide screen LCD monitors? The article went on to say that square monitors actually have more real estate for an equivalent size.
When they first came out, I was the same as everyone else, couldn't wait to get one. And my laptop work horse is wide screen as well.
No question, wide screen or 16:9 as they are also known are ideal for movies - if they are shot in that format. But how many movies do you watch on your computer? Because of the design of our eyes, that is the way we see. We all know what manufacturer had the biggest hand in that.
But for general computing, the square monitor is likely best, except you would be hard pressed to find one today.
On my main computer I have a 19" wide screen monitor and a 17" square monitor. After reading that article I paid a little more attention, and you know what? I can put a lot more web site composition things on the 17 than the 19 and see more. A lot of the time when using certain web construction programs, the right side of the wide screen 19 goes unused or is white space.
Strange how easily we can be convinced bigger is better.
