Update Update Update
Is it my imagination, or are programs being updated more frequently? It seems to me every time I install a new program it has an update two or three days later. Some of the old reliable ones I use are getting updated almost constantly every couple of weeks too.
It wasn't too long ago that a program got an update once a year or even less frequent. And that was for something that made it better, a new function or an improvement on one that didn't quite do everything it should.
Now I find programs are being updated more frequently for trivial reasons, often adding features the average user doesn't need pushing it into the realm of bloat ware. Often these additions make a program less attractive.
Writers and programmers don't have an easy job. They try to please everybody. If someone complains about their program, they try to fix it. Sometimes this is required, but often I think they are giving in to a few complainers. And of course there is the other reason - they update their program because everyone else is.
I know people that are still using ACDSee Version 4 because all they want are the basics for looking at and touching up their pictures.
I am a user of Excite email. They used to have a pretty useful free email program, plain, fast and quick to use. Not long ago they came out with an "updated modern" version. The new version takes forever to load, is often not available, and takes multiple clicks to read your email. Even though it is free, what's the point? The old version was better.
I used to use Wizz, a Firefox extension that was the best RSS reader that I know of. They updated it because a few complainers said it didn't keep track of what was previously read correctly. Now when you open it a box tells you that "your history" isn't activated, followed by a second box that says "you history is erased when you close Firefox." I know that, I am the one that set those settings, and they will stay that way. Poof - gone I moved to an extension called Sage.
These are only samples, there are plenty more programs out there getting the same updated and improved treatment.
At one time I used to think I had found the ideal program when coming across those that do certain things. Now my attitude has changed to "I wonder how long before I have to find a replacement for this program."
