Is Summer Really Over?

Today on TV I heard one announcer say “Summer is finally here.”  Really? You could have fooled me.

This picture of a maple tree in my yard was taken, August 2, 2009.

You can easily see that the leaves have begun to change.

Isn’t this a little early for Nova Scotia? Is nature off its schedule?

This picture was taken today, 4 Aug. 2009, and you can see the process is well under way. In fact when I mowed the lawn there were a lot of brown leaves on the lawn, enough that I had to run over them twice with the mower to mulch them up.

Some say the changing leaves are a normal chemical process that has nothing to do with the coming of fall. Maybe so, but with the month of August well under way, and the cool evenings of September not far behind, it signals the signs of a fast disappearing summer. Seems a little early for that.
