Getting Rid of Our Cents
Once again the topic of getting rid of our cents has attention. Apparently it costs in the vicinity of 1.5 cents to produce and maintain a penny. Personally, as a male I am in favour of getting rid of all our cents and wonder whose sense it was to come out with toonies and loonies. It used to be that walking on a side hill too long would make one leg longer than the other. Now the length of one’s leg depends on which pocket you carry your coins in.
Let’s revaluate getting rid of the penny. Great idea, except – as some have already mentioned, here is the chance to raise prices again. You can bet everything will be rounded up to the nearest five cents, not lowered to the nearest five.
Everything will cost more, not the same, not less. An increased cost of living will surely take place in my opinion.
- Just like when we went metric. Packages got smaller as the kg’s and millimetres took over.
- Just like when gas went from imperial gallons to litres, more cost for less quantity.
- Just like when compact flourscent bulbs came as a power saving item. They last 5 years, no 3, maybe only one, oh oh it’s flickering again.
- Just like when laundry soap became concentrated. Half the size for twice the cost. Well, you only need this much per load, don’t look at the size of the container, the caps are the same size.
The only thing that increased in size was the centre tube of the toilet paper and paper towels.
There will be no more -
- Pennies from heaven.
- Pennies to throw in the fountain or the wishing well.
- Penny for your thoughts.
- A penny saved is a penny earned.
- Penny wise is often pound foolish.
Wonder what will happen to the $1.99 or $29.99 sales?
